Thankfully I'm about 3 hours from Vegas, so I shouldn't have to deal with MASSIVE hoards like people from larger cities would. You're right about Wal-Mart being harder to secure, but I still think it would make an optimal base of operations. Granted, it's a supercenter so that would even further multiply the amount of people who would be there. However, it's still an incredible source of resources of all types. Thankfully it's far enough away from largely populated areas to provide safe haven for a very short while.
Even so, it's not THAT far from everything else. It's close enough for me to travel to other nearby locations in search of survivors, so I'm sure that it's accessible to hostiles as well. I would need to work quickly to secure the entrances and find a way up top. Then I would drop my extra supplies up there, make sure I have a quick way back to the roof, and cautiously head inside. More likely than not, some survivors would have holed themselves up somewhere inside the store, and if I could rescue them, they could help me secure the place.
Perhaps a day or so, after we had acquired all the necessary provisions and established a durable defensive perimeter, we could then start to venture out if we were not surrounded. Probably a small team of 3 people while any others remained back on the roof setting up camp and monitoring the perimeter.
I realize that clearing the building would be the hard part since I would be all alone, but if I took it slow and watched my arse I am relatively certain I could handle it. I'm pretty d**n confident in my marksmanship, and if you read my introduction you could see why. Even if I armed myself with ONLY what I have in my bedroom, that still leaves me with a 12 gauge shotgun, high caliber rifle, a semi-auto .22, my competition rifle (.22, but capable of pinpoint accuracy. d**n well better be for the $7k it's worth now) AND a Ruger 9 mil with a pre-ban high cap mag as well as a couple spare 10 rounders.
So, I should be more than capable of holding my own if I carry any of the rifles (except for the competition rifle, I would use that in a more open environment) and the pistol. The spare weapons could be used to arm any other survivors, and even more guns could be acquired in Wal-Mart itself. Like I said, they sell everything here. Of course, I dont even have to mention the plethora of bladed weapons I could also bring from home, but the guns would take priority.
Anyway, back to clearing the place. Our Wal-Mart is roomy, yet confined enough to make clearing it a relatively simple task. There are tons of those produce display units, those huge refrigerated tubs that come up to about waist height. I could fire over the tops, and it would still obstruct anything from getting to me directly. So far as I took things slowly and secured the doors beforehand to ensure I wouldn't get more company, I SHOULD be okay.
Those same refrigerated tubs would make the interior even easier to defend once secured too. The roof would be near impenetrable and that's where the living quarters would be anyway. We would just need to store our food and such inside the store so the perishables didn't spoil. Even if they do though, big whoop. There is still enough canned and dehydrated food to feed us for months, and the Super Target is just across the street with even MORE food. Yay us.
I do see your point with the gas station thing, but it wouldn't be practical around here. All our gas stations would get overwhelmed instantly, and there wouldn't be enough supplies to sustain more than one person for even two weeks. IF you could even retrieve the food. Our stations are in terrible locations. So chances are you would get overrun within the first day. Granted the same COULD and most likely would be true for Wal-Mart, at least that could be defended far easier, and it would pay off in the long run.
